Amazon Australia Launched
Thought I'd let you all know... I was browsing through their wares (in the Home Improvement section mainly) and they have Bessey and Trademaster clamps... not sure if the prices are cheaper/more expensive than brick and mortar retailers, but thought i'd let you all know in case there are bargains to be had

I had a look today for some Bessey clamps on Amazon, most of what is advertised are from the Brick and Motar retailers.
All it is are retailers signing up with Amazon to advertise their products and Amazon takes a %.
As far as bargains go....the same can be had shopping around online.
We should see bargains once Amazon opens up their sales channel to the public

Searching for planes and chisels - basically nothing there. Bessey clamps - none of the ones I want. Camera lenses, limited range, expensive (one was 3 times the price I can get it from HK). Books limited range, comparing price of one I'm thinking of buying with the US, the US price was about $1 higher than the Australian price once postage was factored in, but the book was $10 cheaper at Booktopia and about $12 cheaper from the book depository with free shipping. Maybe it will get better over time.

Story in the local rag re Amazon selling a UHD tv for $7499, rrp is $6499 odd and Harvey Nornman is $4995. Won’t get many sales if this is the norm.

I'm not sure they offer anything better or cheaper. The reports I have seen put them at the high end in some categories. Do your research when shopping, support local if you can.

Not a bang i was expecting, poor launch.
Pricing is very average, very limited products, they still need to get the amazon prime up and running.
In a lot of the items it was cheaper to find elsewhere online.
Ive brought from Amazon US, UK and Germany, for a lot of items, that were half the price than here and delivery was faster than getting a package sent from Melbourne to Brisbane.
Ive even had case of 12 quarts of oil sent from the US, as the local guys weren't interested in asking their supplier or even bother to call back.
Still Amazon AU, need to get there act together if they want to break into the AU market.
I was hoping Amazon would spark a little action by local retailers to be better at customer service, as thats what we are paying for, don't mind paying more for a product as long as its not stupidly priced by the local retailer 50-100% mark up over buying overseas.
having said that, the bigger local chains here are poor and the only thing they seem to care about is there shareholders.

Once the pricing algorithms kick in it will change pretty fast. All those searches today are going to be twisting the supply (potential demand) and pricing knobs.
There are still more switches to be thrown: discount delivery, stock delivery solutions (which OzPost failed cataclysmically on), holding fees and their own bulk-import cargoes start coming in from the US and China.
Retailers who treat Amazon as an eBay-alternative or simple sales channel are going to find themselves quickly priced out. It's a hideous catch 22 for them.

Yes a very subdued start on the tool front. All the Bessey and Trademaster clamps seem to be listed by Get Tools Direct, interesting that they haven't listed any Bessey K-bodys. They might have made a deal with the Trademaster/Ehoma distributor to try and move some of their stock of parallel jaw clamps by not listing the K-bodys. The distributor must have had these lying around in their warehouse for years now. Although they appear to be a very good product and are quite popular overseas the prices here are eye watering. I've never seen one in the flesh, is there anybody who has?
These are the two different models I'm talking about

I have bought quite a few books from the Book Depository, both before and after they were bought by Amazon. Not too long after Amazon bought the Book Depository, I purchased an Australian authored, Australian published, Australian printed and Australian distributed book.
To my amazement, I found it was cheaper by a huge margin to purchase that book from the Book depository. I even had the option of a staff discount from my wife who did the books for a small chain of Australian bookshops; couldn't believe it.

I've purchased two items from Amazon Australia, the first on Tuesday when they opened, the second yesterday.
For some time I have needed to purchase some genuine Miele vacuum cleaner bags, not a problem as they are available, but at a price. Once Amazon Australia was live I checked out the bags and found some with a saving of $7.98 AUD delivered.
For some time I have wished to purchase a 1¼" x 8 TPI spindle tap for my wood lathe. They are available as a straight set or individually, the individual price was pretty much $148 AUD locally; not exactly a flash price.
The Beall 1¼" x 8 TPI unit, specifically manufactured for wood turners, usually does not ship to Australia from all of the wood working suppliers websites that I looked at. eBay Australia currently has three available with the cheapest one working out at $78.15 AUD delivered, looking better.
Amazon Australia has a dealer somewhere in the USA flogging them for $50.46 (yesterdays price); it should arrive late December.
Sometimes the pricing of Amazon is mind blowing, other times not so. About five years ago I was after a technical photography book that was coming out. Hard cover, Focal Press, 542 pages filled with some of the best technical information on film photography ever printed. The cost was $63 AUD delivered. I met one of the the co-authors (German) he could not believe the selling price. He still received his set commission for each book sold, the first edition sold out, second reprint out now with second hand versions sometimes selling for more than it is still available brand new. Incredibly cheap for what it is.

One thing to remember is that due to it being a soft launch, you don't have the competition on amazon yet as there is typically only 1 or 2 sellers for each item, and most of them have brick and mortar stores or other online business they are trying to protect.
The beauty of the american version is it has multiple sellers for each item (sometimes 2nd hand options too). So i'd imagine in time, amazon australia will become a lot more competitive.
I had a look at Playstation games for the nephews, and they are considerably cheaper than the normal cheapest option (BigW). Fifa 18 is going for $39 when i checked a couple of days ago, BigW i think is upwards of $50 (or at least it was at the time). I know that has nothing to do with woodworking, but as a price comparison of amazon vs everyone else i think its relevant.
I'm going to keep an eye on it and see how it pans out here. might take 12 months for it to get to a decent state, but i think it'll provide some decent value in time.Coming Up With Complex Solutions to Non-Existent Problems Since 1985

I hope that Amazon doesn't do to your Brick and Mortar stores what they've done here.
With a few exceptions, our B&M are dying. Most of the shopping malls are really hurting if not closed. I just bought a small appliance that I knew was more expensive on Amazon BUT I didn't have to find parking, deal with rude sales people and enter the mall in general. It was delivered in two days.
