What timber is this??
Hi all. I had to pull up a bathroom's worth of this flooring yesterday. First thing I noticed was the smell when cutting it and then the colour. Definitely not Tas Oak! Anyone have any ideas? House is a skillion roofed 50's/60's place. Fairly modest, built locally and wondering just what have I brought home. End grain has been planed, face of board is the down side (no finish)

Here is a photo with a freshly planed face next to some Vic Ash/Tas Oak

You mention the smell. What did it smell like?

I shouldn't stick my neck out before we have the smelly information as rustynail has said, but particularly because it is flooring, I would suggest Spotted Gum is a contender. The end grain does look a little dark, but as with many timbers, there can be considerable variation.
Was it a big bathroom? It looks like a good score.

It could be some sort of Teak . I know the Burmese stuff has a decent smell about it but I wouldn’t say it looks exactly like that. There are other sorts but I don’t know about their smell. Teak is a timber used for wet areas . Like boat decks . Couldn’t get much wetter than that .

Is it very heavy and dense ? If it’s one of the many AU hardwoods and is dense like them then I have no idea.
It also has a bit of a Meranti /Mahogany look in some ways about it . If it’s a lightweight then that could be a possibility. meranti timber - Google Search

The end cut (but not the face) looks a bit like my pieces of Red Ironbark, perhaps its Grey Ironbark? I'm not familiar with Blackbutt, but that could be another possibility.

Thanks for the responses.
RN, it might have a Blackwood smell to it. I recognised it when it was being cut but can't quite place it.
Paul, I think there is too much "figure" for SG?
Rob, I have very little experience with Teak but definitely not Meranti. Too dense and not the open pore look. Cancels out Mahogany too?
Fuzzie, I have used a little Blackbutt (for decking) and wouldn't cross it out. I am leaning to a Eucalypt.
A reasonable sized bathroom 2.8 x 1.8 but boards do have nail holes every 450.

I cant add anything useful, but this looks identical (face and endgrain) to the floor boards I have in my 1950s weatherboard home in Altona.
I too have been wondering what flooring I have. Working towards knockdown rebuild at end of the year and considering lifting the flooring prior to knockdown.

Hi KB. I would definitely try to keep it. Just looking at the underside shows lots of gorgeous grain and a rich brown.

How about throwing 'Crow's Ash' (Flindersia Australis) into the mix...
Popular for use on Dance floors and other areas for heavy duty use.

Hi CR. I haven't come across many yellow bits yet but I will check.

Is the smell like nutmeg or some type of Asian spice?
Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.
