Dewalt vs Hiikoki
I was just about to jump in and buy a brand new dewalt 7491 xe today at sydney tools when this one caught my eye
Hikoki C10RJ,, it has very similar features to the Dewalt including rack and pinion fence control, and wide(r) rip fence capacity
in addition to the DW it has soft start, braking at switchoff, rack and pinion tilt control and one I'm real keen on, an extendable outfeed support,
plus built in legs and trolley and a 6 yr warranty
the hikoki is $200 less than dw but the latter has redmption deals happening (I've never seen so many brand new dw circular saws and table saw stands for sale on fb marketplace)
I'm aware now that this is hitachi with some involvement with metabo in the states (still cant get my head around the name tho)
anyone had any experience with either of these or maybe opinions , I'm all ears

Table saw 254mm | DEWALT

The 7491 is good - very happy with mine - but those extra features in the Hikoki sound even better.
For what it's worth the 7491 stops pretty fast. I think it might be electronically braked?

I don;t have either saw, but my DeWalt tools are for brute force and ignorance, the Hikokis are more refined and nicer to use

thanks guys
looks like I might have to be the test guinea pig
just to confuse the issue, A local supplier offered me an SB12 today at the same price as the DW
but I'm not that keen on it because of the crap splitter and guard setup and no riving knife
otherwise it also ticks a lot of boxes

I’m on my second dewalt saw. First one was the dw745 with a 10 inch blade, sold it due to
lack of space. Just got the 8 1/4 inch model this week after missing the first one ! Both work great for a portable saw but the dewalts are far louder than other brands I believe, brake on the new one helps a bit. There was a guy (Caligra ?) on here a few years ago that sold his dewalt to buy a metabo and regretted it from memory.
I paid 685 down from 795. Sometimes the lower price appears on the Bunnings site, sometimes not.
Regarding the redemption- my 60 tooth blade showed up this arvo with just a sticker on the packet ! No wrapping at all. No sign of the stand, although right after the email approving my redemption another came from dewalt saying expect delays.
I’d go dewalt as there’s more owners to discuss ideas/issues with. The SB12 would be way quieter….
edit - slightly unrelated but my old dewalt gave me the creeps a bit with the blade fully extended to 85-90mm cutting height. In researching the smaller blade model I saw on YouTube that OHS laws in the US are changing (or have) to some ratio to limit table size vs blade size. I expect the Hikoki table size matches the dewalt as they look very very similar. Might be worth winding the blade all the way up and checking it out.You boys like Mexico ?

I have the DW 7491 xe and find it to be very good, the fence in particular (fences are important to me ). I looked at the Metabo at the time (maybe 4 years ago) and rejected it because of the flimsy fence. Perhaps they have woken up to this, and drastically improved it. (or maybe not - it looks the same as I recall it)
Soft start is a good idea and desirable (on all tools).
Extendible outfeed is maybe a good idea, depending on how well it is made. It may just be a flimsy extendible bar, with an edge that is just waiting to catch the job as it is fed through. Thin sheet material can droop down after leaving the table and drop below the bar, preventing forward progress - THIS CAN BE DISASTROUS! DAMHIKT! I dispensed with the DW stand and made my own cart with a permanent extension on it. There is only about 20mm between the table and the extension, so drooping doesn't happen. It's about 250mm wide and 350-400mm long.

I'm still keen on the DW, particularly because it has the rack and pinion fence
the thing that caught my eye with the hikoki was that it had a very similar fence and rack and pinion setup to the DW with the same actions for further extension
however looking at the similar priced metabo in aus, it does have an average looking fence with no R&P, I wouldnt be interested in that one either
the metabo they are selling in the US is virtually the same as hitachi/hikoki

As I recall, it was the locking mechanism on the Metabo that was no good. Hikoki looks the same. If at all possible you should inspect them both before purchase.

Hi H. I have a rebadged SB10 and I think the SB12 would be a far better saw than either of them. Cast iron table and wings, bigger motor (mine is 3hp), bigger table top, longer fence etc. Comparing apples and oranges. The only reason to purchase a portable saw is the portability.

I would find a way to fit the SB12 in. The difference between a job site saw with a universal motor and a saw like the SB12 just in noise would incredible.
My brother inlaw has had one of these for years and has made many really great pieces on it from full size furniture to small intricate boxes.

Redemption stand turned up yesterday.
That AWR review says it’s abridged from issue 85 which was published in 2014 so some of the specs may differ. You boys like Mexico ?
