Second hand bandsaw advise
I was hoping to get some advise on a second hand bandsaw.
There is someone who is selling a 2005 Carbatec 14" sbw-3501b bandsaw.
From googling this it appears this would have cost approx $800 when new. Am I wrong in thinking that $600 for this second hand is unreasonable?
What are people's thoughts on this bandsaw? It seems that Carbatec still sell an updated version of this model
Thanks

Hi Jarrodd,
It looks like it has 200 mm depth of cut, what's the motor power rating 1.5 HP?
If so, $800 was worth a bit more in 2005 than it is now.
The machine looks like has been well looked after and probably hasn't had a lot of work.
I've seen plenty of people ask $400 for a 30 year old generic 14" bandsaw with a .75 HP motor and 150mm depth of cut.
That would probably be more than the original price.
If this bandsaw looks to meet your needs (depth of cut and HP) then make an offer that works for buyer and seller.
I don't think $600 is unreasonable for an older machine in good condition.
Hope this helps (not a bandsaw expert, but do own one)
Regards, Jeff

There are some very similar looking variations of that bandsaw, and given the stand, the knobs to open the door, and the one-piece door, it appears to be currently on sale for about $1200-$1300.
So the asking price is about half of brand new.
Check if it's the 2-speed version - a few manufacturers did 1-piece door =2-speed, and vice versa.

I agree with arose62 here, this is not the same as the BAS-350c currently on special it's actually the much heavier BAS345C https://www.carbatec.com.au/machiner...de-length-2553. Does that make it worth the $100? Probably. If you want a negotiation point, look at the age of the tyres, that'll cost you to replace them with urethane ones, and unless it has a pristine, still new from seller, blade then you're going to buy new ones of that too - none of which isn't "consumables" but still a negotiation point

3/4HP, single speed, 200mm rip capacity - that doesn't sound like the HD model and in my book puts it back in the $500 bracket.
The 3/4HP will be OK with a brand new blade but once the blade loses its bite it will struggle in hardwood above 150mm.

Τhe $699 Carbatec special has a 1.5hp motor.
I'm also on the market for a bandsaw and I would go for the $699 one, however after reexamining all the dimensions unfortunately I need to go even smaller than that

I think that is too much for a second hand band saw.
in comparison I think my bandsaw is a steal then... .bought it for $1000NZD, which is about $900 AUD.
600mm wheel size. 800 x 600 table size. a lot of steel. made in Italy. 3 phase

The size/power and type of used machinery does not align all that well with price.
3P is not common in DIYer sheds and few folks can fit their own VFDs, and many DIYers simply cannot fit larger machinery in their sheds, all of which devalues this sort of gear.
The result is the market for large 3P machines is small so they are often not much more expensive (sometimes less) than smaller single phase machines.
At the mens shed we were given about a dozen 3P machines for which we had no use and they have proved difficult to sell and some remained on Gumtree for more than 6 months despite in some cases halving the initially advertised price.
3 of these machines were 3P grinders (2 x GMF HD 3P 1HP 8" grinders [One not working], and a CI pedestal Atkins 1HP 3HP multispeed 10" grinder) and I did a deal with the shed whereby I swapped a 15 year old Chinese 1/2HP 8" SP grinder I had in my shed for all 3 of the 3P grinders.

3/4 HP is just going to struggle at anything other than small work. Been there with my first saw. Having to fall back to a handsaw to cut quite modest turning blanks was a good education on horse power.
