My Theoretical Infill Shoulder plane.
My theoretical Infill shoulder plane.
That’s a big word for me, ok due to popular demand from the Misfits who frequent this Forgotten dark Corner of the forum we’re only the low life’s hang out, I’m “Thinking” about making a Infill Shoulder Plane, well actually I’ve been thinking about it for a good few months now, I’ve in fact collected nearly everything I need just in case I actually make a start, I think only need too get some more Jeweller’s saw blades.
So my requirements,
It must look pretty [emoji7],
It must function extremely well, ok I might have those two around the wrong way,
I want it over stuffed,
Would possibly like too include a lever Cap,but we will see.
Bed angle of 12 degrees, Bevel up Blade so manly End grain work.
Actually I haven’t really got that far yet, so I’m happy too hear others opinions, working with in the compound of what materials I have on hand.
3 mm Thick Brass plate 102 mm wide 800 mm long,
12.5 mm Thick Brass Bar 38 mm wide 200 mm long
An a piece of 01 Tool steel 5 mm thick big enough too use as a soul, I just can’t find it at the moment, but did I have my hands on it last week, so it’s not too buried in the Workshop.
Blade will also be cut from the same piece of 01 Tools steel.
I’ve also started some well detailed diagrams, but they need a little more work [emoji849].
I better get drawing.
Cheers Matt,(Suffering from Peer group pressure)

Matt, I am glad you are venturing back into the world of plane making, I will be watching with much interest.
Will the new plane be influenced by the “Body”, like a thinner sister ? Or will the new model be a new thoroughbred altogether ?Brad.

I like what I'm seeing. Let me know where you get your jewellers saw blades from. I need some too.

The Tablecloth Returns…
Comfy chair has been pulled closer to the fireplace and the popcorn is being prepared…
Any thoughts yet on what timber you’ll be using?Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Some progress today, small steps, haven’t been feeling the best today, both Sally and me have “Man Flu” [emoji849]
I quite like this shape, but am happy to hear others views,
Cheers Matt.

So happy to see the return of the tablecloth! Also happy to see you using the lost art of sketching and it's lookin' good. Not too fussed about pulling up a chair near the fire, a bit too warm for that just yet, but I might find a stool near the beer fridge.
Let the fun begin!

I like the concept for the overall shape; but I think the back may be too short at only 70mm compared to the toe length at 50mm. I assume the (as yet unseen) wedge will be having a big-arsed round end to use as the handle?
Pass on our sympathies to Sally; it must be trying for her to have to nurse you whilst coping with her own illnessNothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

It really needs to have a low drag coefficient (Cd). I'd suggest some initial modelling in clay and wind tunnel testing to refine the final shape
(that'll keep him busy for a few days...)

A Very Cunning Plan...I approve.
Just be careful you don't make your design too swoopy and aerodynamic. I used to own one of these -

but it was so streamlined it was impossible to hold onto. In the end I sold it and bought a more conventional LN block plane !
