What is this?? new images
I have been turning a number of large candle holders for various family members and a few friends. Basically rummage through the stockpile for suitable sizes and rough out half a dozen or so and chuck on the floor next to the lathe, dont pay a lot of attention just get em round and that i'll do for the moment.
Just finished one and I have no idea of the species, in fact I have no idea where it came from. It turns ok, perhaps a bit stiff but the smell darn thing gives a nasty odor as you're turning it. The smell is very much like the smelly fly traps available at most hardware stores
Have look does anybody know what it might beLast edited by hughie; 9th February 2023 at 12:49 PM. Reason: further info

If it smells like dog poo, I’d guess it’s QLD walnut.

Looks quite a bit like Teak . And Teak, the Burmese stuff I'm pretty sure has a distinctive smell that you notice when you walk into the same room as it sometimes.
Ive always thought the smell was a bit like Cat Pee or some sort of animal pee sort of . I just googled it and other opinions on the smell were Sweat and spoiled milk . No one mentions Cats .

My guess is some kind of mangrove. It is hard to tell from the photos but mangrove does have a distinct grain with clumps of vascular bundles. It often smells bad from marine worms and stuff rotting in the wood. It would have to be fairly light and soft.

If it came out of my stash I'd call it prickly acacia (Acacia nilotica).
