lining boxes
I am wanting to line a couple of boxes using suede pigskin, I have read a few posts and think that gluing the hide to card and then gluing the pieces into the box will be the way to go. Can I have some guide to what glue/tape others have used and any tips that might help.
thanks. Rick.

I haven't used pigskin suede but I have used Sika Sprayfix adhesive for calfskin, felt and synthetic felt. I just spray the cardboard, wait a minute then press on the oversized material, trim to size afterwards with a rotary cutter. The boxes I've done this one have just been lined on the bottom, the timber dust cover is pressed down on top of this so you cant see the edge of the card.
Contact cement would also work - I prefer the Sprayfix for felt though, no mess at all.

I have watched Ian Hawthorns videos and used his method. Go to office works and buy some A4 sheets of double sided tape. Fit to cardboard then peel off and stick to the oversized pigskin trim and drop in the box. Works for me.

+1 for Sikkens Sprayfix and for Xpress-it A4 and A3 DS adhesive sheets.
I also use a lot of DS tape bought in various widths 10-50mm as 50 metre rolls from various sellers on eBay. If I’m doing a lot of boxes I find this approach easier and much cheaper than the big sheets.
For boxes where I’ve been asked to use decoupage paper for lining (usually restorations rather than new boxes) I use Mod Podge - a PVA adhesive and sealer combined.

My cardstock in 0.5-0.6mm art card from my local art supplies store Eckersleys and I use a hard rubber brayer (roller) to make sure the fabric is firmly attached to the card.
Best regards,
Brian

Personally i would not dare glueing up a box with the lining in, the smallest bit of glue or whatever finish you are using after on the suede will ruin it, the pig skin suede just soakes it in and leaves an ugly water mark.
I glue suede directly to the base after the box is oiled and cured. With a sharp knife and accurate measuring the suede can be cut to the exact size. For glueing i use a thin application of PVA then a piece of something about 6mm thick on its edge to press around the perimeter then lay it flat and press the rest.

spray adhesive
With suede it is very porous make sure you let the spray adhesive go tacky before you adhere the suede, you can get glue seeping through the pores in the fabric.

I've used strips of carpet tape with success. It's incredibly sticky.

Hi Yvan,
The Express-IT sheets from Officeworks are acid-free and suitable for archiving according to OW’s website.

Homey is bang-on correct.
This stuff from AliExpress is ultra-thin but sticks to everything like crazy. Its used for shoes and phones. I used it for all the displays at DJ's and their internal departments.
It has many widths, so it removes a lot of the cutting. Overlaps are OK too.
One puts it on to the item, remove the backing then carefully placing the item... there is zero chance of adjustments.
Lining with papers, cloths, suede and card is easy with this method.

Recently did the bottom of a box using a method similar to the one used by Double D except I used a spray on contact adhesive. It's J Burrows brand and is acid free. Spraying 1 surface makes it removable/adjustable.

Aldav,
you may be waiting a while, all my questions over the last month or so have been for future reference, I haven't been in the garage for some time and am going into Hospital next week for a back op. So maybe sometime in the new year, I did get them assembled and your hinges worked perfect.
Cheers Rick
