It is such a simple, but brilliant idea. I should have already known that when drilling the frog pin screws. Should also help to get the pins fir lever caps better aligned, etc.
I am sure many will start using that approach now.
That already deserves a special price I think.

Well I can report that the drilling of the lever cap went perfectly using the guide pin method. There was almost a tragedy though, the marker outerer marked the other side upside down, so the holes wouldnt have lined up, luckily the disaster was averted before drilling started, though the centerpunch marks were in before I realised .
I decided on the shape of the neck on the go, originally was going to taper the lever cap down to the 2.5mm step at the boss, more like the bottom profile.
I will live with it like this for a while, still undecided.
Still more smoothing and sanding to go with everything yet, and I still want to taper the top of the blade. And of course the lever cap screw still has to be made.
Maybe will put an Ironwood infill in the top of the knob.
I have gone with 10x1.25mm threads, I would have gone with 1.5mm pitch, but couldnt find a die, so 1.25 it is.
The plane weighed in at 4lb 12.7oz, or 2.172kg, it will be slightly less when I trim the top sides off the blade, but I dont expect it to change greatly.

I should add, this lever cap design is not mine. I have modelled the basic design off one of Bruce Neville of the UK’s planes that I saw on Instagram.

Brad,
I’ve been waiting patently too see how your Lever Cap come out,it’s looking fantastic.
As you know I’m going with the same design,so really keen too see how it goes.
Cheers Matt.
I reckon the bolt in the lever cap looks perfect the way it is by the way, job done.[emoji6]

I am happy with how the lever cap has gone Matt. With the slot shaped with a bit of dogleg on it it works perfectly. I still have to refine the shape a bit more, but it would work fine the way it is if I wanted to go rustic.
If I filed a bit off the front of the mouth so the blade could poke through, and gave the blade a quick rub on the stones, I reckon I could take some shavings tomorrow
Hey, if you want that bolt for yours I can send it to youBrad.

I got a proper brass screw made this morning, I am leaving it as is for now. Might change it later to put an inset Ironwood button if I have time later.
Looks a bit better than Matts new bolt, that I was using for the last lot of photos

I fettled the end of the lever cap where it now makes full contact with the blade when tightened.
Gave the blade a quick flatten and sharpen on the diamond stones, and then the water stones, it was sharp enough to shave my arm hairs, but could still be better.
Then carefully opened up the front of the mouth, I think maybe its still too tight. But I am not going to rush in and open it up any more just yet.
I gave it a bit of a workout on some bits laying around in the shed.
First up was a bit of Black Bean. I am guessing the consertinered shavings may be a result of the mouth being too tight.
But I will wait for comment from the experts.

And now, the one everyone is waiting to see........PINE
DSC_1751.jpg
And because I wanted to see how it went on the type of timber that it will get mostly used on, I found a piece of Cooktown Ironwood, straight grain. I will test it on some more figured stuff later.

Here is a close up of the planed surface.

0.03mm, that converts to 0.00118".
The Ironwood shavings were coming off looking a bit thinner than the Pine, but I didnt think they would be that thin.
I will recheck again later once I get the chance to play more.

AS I mentioned in Bob's thread, today might be the last chance I get to do any more work on my plane for quite some time, at least until after the finishing date.
I go back out to work tomorrow, but if I still have spare time and opportunity next week, I will finish the whole plane off to a much higher standard.
Apart from more work on the blade, cambering and sharpening. And adjusting the mouth if needed, and possibly putting a sharper angle on the end of the lever cap to let the shavings come out a bit easier.
All other work will just be cosmetic.
If I need to, I will use these photos in the "Finished" thread to present a working plane , albeit not quite finished to the standard I would like.Brad.

I kept a bit of time spare this afternoon to get the plane a bit more finished off. I didnt get time to finish shaping the lever cap, or the blade.
Hopefully I will get the chance next week, but it is, what it is.
I used some Flood Penetrol Wood Oil on the woodwork. My can is nearly bwggered, it has gone very thick, so it didnt soak in as much as it usually does, and was a bit harder to rub off.
Might put some Ubeaut Traditional wax on next week.
I didnt get the chamfers on the brass as good as I would have liked, but will revisit these later at some stage.
